Sustainable Packaging Materials Lab
Ongoing Projects
Welcome to the website for the Sustainable Packaging Materials Lab of the Department of Sustainable Biomaterials at Virginia Tech. The focus of this lab is the study of sustainable packaging materials and their applications; including manufacturing processes, food packaging systems, smart packaging, and biosensor systems using chemiluminescent technology.

BACKGROUND:

Dr.Kim is is an Associate Professor of Packaging Systems and Design housed in the Department of Sustainable Biomaterials at Virginia Tech (VT) and an expert in sustainable packaging materials and applications. His research projects have been supported by the bioplastic packaging industry as well as state and federal agencies. His research team has extensive experience in the commercialization of bioplastic packaging systems through technology transfer to industry partners.

Dr. Kim holds several patents in the areas of biopolymers, bioplastics, and packaging application development. He has also served as a technical advisor or a principle investigator to globally leading companies, major manufacturers of PLA, PBS, PHA, and PBAT. He graduated from Clemson University with a degree in Packaging Science and joined the Department of Sustainable Biomaterials in 2010 as a co-founder of the Packaging B.S. degree program.

In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Kim serves as a career advisor for packaging students and as a faculty advisor for the alumni group. He teaches courses on packaging materials—including paper, corrugated fiberboard, and packaging polymers with a focus on their interactions with food and healthcare products.

In recent years, he has also served as the leading faculty to host the Packaging Career Fair (HokiePack).Â
